189 Students Awarded Chinese Scholarships to Soar to New Heights

The Chinese Embassy in Freetown hosted a farewell reception on Thursday, August 22, 2024, for 189 Sierra Leonean students who have been awarded scholarships to pursue further studies at Chinese universities. The event, held at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown, highlighted the ongoing collaboration between China and Sierra Leone, marking a significant milestone in their longstanding relationship.

Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Wang Qing, addressed the gathering, congratulating the scholarship recipients on their achievements. He emphasized that the scholarships are a testament to the Sierra Leonean government’s efforts to promote transformative development under President Julius Maada Bio’s leadership. Ambassador Qing urged the students to use this opportunity to enhance their academic skills and immerse themselves in Chinese culture.

Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Haja Ramatulai Wurie, also spoke at the event, congratulating the students and underscoring the significance of the day. She highlighted the enduring friendship between Sierra Leone and China, which has spanned over five decades, and acknowledged China’s role in supporting Sierra Leone’s peace, stability, and development. The Minister emphasized the importance of Human Capital Development and the Free Quality Education initiative.

The 189 scholarship recipients are set to embark on their academic journeys in China, carrying the hopes and expectations of their nation. With over 1,300 Sierra Leonean students having received Chinese scholarships in the past 20 years, this latest batch of scholars is poised to take the nation’s educational ties with China to new heights. As they depart, they are encouraged to be resilient, build friendships, and act as positive representatives of Sierra Leone.
