25-Year-Old Man Remanded on Alleged Sexual Penetration Charges Involving Minor

A 25-year-old man, Joseph Sao Amara, has been remanded in custody after being charged with alleged sexual penetration, in violation of Section 19 of the Sexual Offences Act 2012, as repealed and replaced by Section 4(a)(ii) of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 2019.

The alleged incident, involving a child under the age of 18, reportedly took place on December 26, 2023, in Freetown. The case was heard at the Criminal Session of the Sexual Offences Court No. 7, located on Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown. Upon the charge being read and explained, Amara pleaded not guilty to the allegations. Notably, he appeared in court without legal representation.

Justice Momoh-Jah Stevens denied the defendant bail and ordered him to be remanded at the Male Correctional Facility. The case has been adjourned to April 30, 2025, for further hearings.
