The Defence Medical Services (DMS) of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) officially received a donation of ten orthopaedic beds from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China on Wednesday, March 25, 2025. The donation ceremony took place at the 34 Military Hospital in Wilberforce Barracks, signifying a new chapter in the ongoing partnership between Sierra Leone and China.
Colonel Dr. G Luseni, Deputy Commandant of the Defence Medical Services, welcomed attendees on behalf of the DMS Commandant. He stated that the 34 Military Hospital is tasked with providing medical care to RSLAF personnel and the broader Wilberforce community. “About two weeks ago, the DMS organized an orientation ceremony for our Chinese medical colleagues from the People’s Republic of China,” Colonel Luseni added, underlining the two parties’ commitment to delivering quality medical services.
The donation of the ten orthopedic beds was described by Colonel Luseni as timely and essential for the hospital’s operations. “We will utilize the donated items for their intended purpose,” he affirmed. He expressed gratitude to the Chinese government and the PLA for their ongoing support in terms of technical assistance, infrastructure, medical care, and hospital equipment.
The 34 Military Hospital is currently undergoing a significant expansion, increasing its capacity from 150 to 600 beds. “The RSLAF required this support as they transition from a Level 2 to a Level 3 hospital,” Colonel Luseni pointed out. He also acknowledged Major General AI Bangura, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the RSLAF, for his continued support over the past four months.
Senior Colonel PU Lin, the Chinese Defence Attaché, emphasized the strong bond between China and Sierra Leone, noting, “Cooperation between China and Sierra Leone has always been cordial.” He mentioned the collaborative efforts of the Chinese Military Medical Expert Group with the 34 Military Hospital aimed at enhancing medical services for both the RSLAF and the people of Sierra Leone. Senior Colonel Lin formally donated the orthopedic beds on behalf of the Chinese Embassy.
Major General AI Bangura expressed his appreciation for the donation, linking it to the vision of President Dr. Julius Maada Bio. “The 34 Military Hospital must become a center for our nation’s stability, as healthcare directly contributes to stability,” Major General Bangura remarked. He urged the hospital staff to align with the President’s vision, aiming for the 34 Military Hospital to be the primary healthcare provider in Sierra Leone.
Colonel Dr. Nabieu, delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the Defence Medical Services, extended heartfelt thanks to the Chinese government for the orthopedic bed donation. He also commended Major General AI Bangura for his ongoing support and acknowledged all staff members for their dedication. “As this is the first set of equipment donated to the Orthopedic Department of the 34 Military Hospital, this donation is of great significance,” Colonel Dr. Nabieu added.
This donation marks a critical step in the deepening partnership between China and Sierra Leone, further enhancing the medical capabilities of the RSLAF and improving healthcare for the citizens of Sierra Leone.
