The Sierra Leone Teachers Union has raised alarms over the recent suspension of over 4,000 teachers from the payroll, warning that this action could severely disrupt the planned reopening of schools in September.
Union representatives emphasized that many of the affected teachers are actively engaged in their schools and had previously undergone verification. Concerns were also voiced about the verification process itself, with reports indicating that some schools were overlooked by verification teams. Additionally, the union acknowledged that while certain teachers have resigned, abandoned their posts, or unfortunately passed away, these matters should be handled swiftly and fairly.
“This issue transcends mere salary concerns; it touches the very future of education in Sierra Leone,” the union declared in a statement.
While the union supports the government’s efforts to streamline the payroll, they insist on the immediate reinstatement of verified teachers to avert educational disruptions and to enable the recruitment of qualified staff. In their correspondence, the union has appealed to the President for intervention in resolving these urgent issues.
