Kamakwie, Sierra Leone – A retired Dental Officer, John Kabba Dumbuya, aged seventy, has been taken into custody by law enforcement authorities after sharing a viral video containing false allegations that his 110-year-old bedridden mother was gang-raped.
In the video, Dumbuya, visibly distressed, translates his mother’s statements from Limba to English, claiming she was attacked during the night. However, when social workers and police detectives visited the village to investigate, the elderly woman denied the rape allegations.
Through interpreters, she clarified that while male assailants did break into her bedroom and damage her belongings, they did not sexually assault her. Police officials stated that she “vehemently denied being raped,” contradicting Dumbuya’s claims in the video.
Dumbuya is currently being held for questioning, with authorities investigating his motivations for disseminating the misleading video. Activists have called for punitive measures against individuals who make false allegations of rape, emphasizing the harm caused by such actions.
As of press time, Dumbuya remained in police custody, with investigations ongoing.
