At the Africa Food Systems Forum on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, announced that the Torma Bum Rice Industrial Complex requires $800 million to reach completion.

With $480 million already secured and a further $100 million committed by the African Development Bank, the project is gaining momentum. Launched on June 11, 2021, by President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, Torma Bum aims to reduce Sierra Leone’s reliance on rice imports by 75%.

By empowering local farmers with modern techniques and technology, the project will stimulate economic growth, improve livelihoods, and enhance food security. Its comprehensive approach addresses the entire value chain, from farm machinery to infrastructure development and processing facilities.

While challenges lie ahead, effective implementation, sustained investment, and quality control will be crucial to success. With training and support, our farmers can maximize the benefits of this initiative.

The Torma Bum Rice Project is a giant leap towards food security, economic growth, and a more prosperous Sierra Leone. Let us embrace this opportunity with enthusiasm and dedication, ensuring our nation reaps the rewards of this visionary initiative.
