CARL Applauds Edmond Alpha as New Chief Electoral Commissioner

Freetown, March 11, 2026 – The Centre for Accountability and Rule of Law (CARL) has officially congratulated Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha on his recent appointment as Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL). In a letter dated March 11, 2026, Acting Executive Director Jeremy Ben Simbo commended Alpha for his professional integrity and dedication to the role.

“On behalf of CARL, I extend our warmest congratulations on your appointment as Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the ECSL,” the message states.

Recognized as a leading civil society organization, CARL noted that Alpha’s appointment reflects the trust placed in his integrity, experience, and commitment to public service. The organization emphasized the critical nature of the ECSL’s role in safeguarding democratic governance, ensuring credible electoral processes, and fostering public confidence in democratic institutions across the nation.

CARL elaborated on the necessity for ECSL leadership to promote transparency, accountability, inclusivity, and the rule of law within the electoral framework. They expressed optimism that Alpha’s tenure will markedly enhance the credibility and effectiveness of the Commission in executing its constitutional responsibilities.

Highlighting their commitment to constructive collaboration, CARL expressed eagerness for ongoing dialogue with the ECSL under Alpha’s leadership. The organization aims to strengthen electoral integrity, advocate for electoral reforms, and build public trust in the electoral process.

Mr. Alpha was appointed substantive Chief Electoral Commissioner in February 2026 by His Excellency the President, pending parliamentary approval. This appointment garnered support from 12 out of 14 registered political parties, following a consultation process aligned with Section 32(3) of the 1991 Constitution. Following his parliamentary endorsement, Alpha took the oath of office administered by President Bio on March 3, 2026.

The Chief Electoral Commissioner reassured citizens and political stakeholders that his leadership will adhere strictly to the Constitution and relevant electoral laws, committing to an open-door policy and constructive engagement with political parties and stakeholders.
