United in Grief: Government Leaders Respond to Freetown Building Collapse

Monday, September 16, 2024, a devastating building collapse occurred in Kissy, East Freetown, leaving several people dead and others trapped under the rubble. President Julius Maada Bio has expressed his deepest condolences to the victims and families affected.

In response to the disaster, President Bio described the event as a “devastating loss” and pledged his government’s full support to rescue efforts and survivors. The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) will spearhead the rescue mission, backed by the government. A full-scale inquiry will also be launched to investigate the cause of the collapse and prevent similar disasters in the future.

Mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has also sent a heartfelt message to the victims and their families, assuring residents that the Freetown City Council is actively engaged in responding to the crisis. “My heart goes out to everyone affected by the collapse,” she said.

Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh visited the scene of the collapsed building today to assess the situation and offer support to the affected families.

The combined efforts of President Bio, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr, and Vice President Jalloh demonstrate the government’s dedication to supporting the affected families and ensuring the city’s safety.
