Daru, April 20, 2026 Residents of Daru are urging authorities to increase police patrols and install street lighting after a reported rise in nighttime harassment that has heightened fear across the township.
In a formal appeal sent to this paper, resident Mustapha Abdul Aruna said locals have been targeted and pursued late at night, leaving workers and commuters anxious about moving through the community after dark. “The people of Daru deserve to feel safe in their own community, both during the day and at night,” the appeal stated.
The call for intervention follows the death of Sallu Moina Kanneh, Finance Officer of the Ndomakeh Federation, which unsettled the Jawie Chiefdom last month. Kanneh was reported missing on March 11 after leaving his Daru home for early morning prayers around 5 a.m. His body was found on March 17 in a river at nearby Sasahun village. The Daru Police Division has opened a full investigation but has not released further details.
Aruna urged local authorities and stakeholders to investigate the harassment reports and act swiftly to improve security. Residents say better lighting and a stronger police presence would deter attacks and restore confidence for those traveling at night.
Community members hope the appeal will prompt immediate steps to upgrade lighting infrastructure and expand nighttime patrols in the township.
