Sierra Leone will host the first-ever Economic Community of West African States Mid-Year Summit from July 12 to 19, 2026, bringing together regional leaders for critical discussions on West Africa’s future.

The week-long summit will be held at the newly upgraded Lungi International Conference Centre and at selected venues in Freetown. Heads of state, foreign ministers, and senior officials from ECOWAS member states are expected to attend.

Key agenda items include regional security, trade facilitation, migration, and economic integration. Organizers said Lungi was chosen for its strategic location near Freetown International Airport, which offers secure access and efficient logistics for international delegations.

Hosting the summit marks a diplomatic milestone for Sierra Leone. Government officials say it provides an opportunity to showcase investments in conference infrastructure and hospitality while strengthening the country’s profile within ECOWAS.

“This summit places Sierra Leone at the heart of regional decision-making,” a government source noted. “It is a chance to demonstrate our capacity to host major international events.”

The program includes plenary sessions, ministerial meetings, and technical roundtables. Outcomes will feed into the Authority of Heads of State and Government session scheduled for later in the week.

Authorities have put measures in place for security, transport between Lungi and Freetown, and minimal disruption to residents. Local businesses in both cities are preparing for increased demand in accommodation, catering, and transport.

Analysts expect discussions to center on cross-border security threats, progress on the ECOWAS single market, and humanitarian issues affecting the region.

With final preparations underway, officials say Sierra Leone is ready to deliver a secure, professional, and successful summit.
