A commercial kekeh rider was arrested at the Ferry Junction checkpoint on Thursday, July 16, 2026, after police allegedly found him in possession of an AK-47 rifle and 26 rounds of ammunition.
According to the Sierra Leone Police, Checkpoint Commander Sub-Inspector Mustapha Sesay grew suspicious when the suspect, identified as Ibrahim Badamasi, allegedly attempted to conceal a bag under a parked vehicle. A search of the bag reportedly uncovered the firearm and ammunition.
Badamasi was immediately taken into custody and transferred to Ross Road Police Station, where he remains while investigations continue.
The Ferry Junction checkpoint was established by Harbour Police Division Local Unit Commander CSP Fayia David Joshua to strengthen security monitoring and deter criminal activity in the area.
Freetown-East Regional Commander AIG Brima Kanneh praised the officers for their vigilance, describing the arrest as a demonstration of commitment to public safety. He called on personnel to maintain proactive operations to protect lives and property.
Residents around PWD Junction Ataya Base, where Badamasi is known to operate, described him as a quiet individual and said the arrest came as a surprise to the community.
Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the weapon, its intended use, and whether other persons are linked to the case.
The Sierra Leone Police reiterated their commitment to combating illegal firearm possession and ensuring the safety of citizens across the country.
