The European Union Delegation in Sierra Leone has initiated direct talks with the leadership of the opposition All People’s Congress amid rising political tension over the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
In a statement released Thursday, 13 August 2026, the EU described the engagement as a “rich and informative exchange” aimed at understanding the APC’s position on the proposed reforms.
The meeting follows a dramatic walkout by APC Members of Parliament during debate on the Bill last week. The opposition cited concerns over both the substance of the amendments and the process of their consideration.
Government maintains the Bill reflects recommendations from the Justice Cowan Constitutional Review and the Tripartite Committee. The APC, however, has rejected key provisions and accused the majority of rushing the process.
With constitutional amendments requiring a two-thirds majority in Parliament, the Bill’s passage remains uncertain without opposition support.
Analysts say the EU’s involvement underscores growing international interest in ensuring the reform process is inclusive and transparent.
