WAR-ERA WEAPONS SUSPECTED AFTER RIFLE DISCOVERY

By Joseph Momoh, D.S Reporter

PORT LOKO – Police have recovered two heavily rusted AK-47 rifles believed to have been buried for years in the Moyiba community, Port Loko District.

The discovery was made on Sunday, August 16, 2026, following a tip-off from resident Mohamed Foday Kabba. Officers responded swiftly, secured the weapons from inside a rice bag, and launched investigations.

Due to their condition, authorities suspect the rifles may date back to Sierra Leone’s civil conflict period or the time of ECOMOG deployment. However, police have not confirmed the origin, ownership, or purpose for which the firearms were buried.

Investigators are now working to establish whether the weapons are connected to any past or present criminal activity.

The Sierra Leone Police has renewed its call for citizens to report any sighting of suspicious firearms or ammunition immediately. Members of the public are also warned not to handle or move suspected weapons as it could endanger lives and interfere with police work.

Inquiries are ongoing.
