FREETOWN — Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor Bah says Sierra Leone must turn growing international competition over its critical minerals into real economic gains for citizens.
Bah made the statement while responding to increased U.S. interest in Sierra Leone’s critical minerals, as well as investment opportunities in energy and infrastructure.
According to the Minister, Washington is pushing for American companies to take a leading role in potential investments, especially in the minerals sector.
“They want to be at the front of the queue when it comes to critical minerals, and that is something we are negotiating,” Bah said.
He noted that with multiple global powers now eyeing Sierra Leone’s resources, government has a duty to ensure the country benefits from the competition.
“It is our responsibility to make sure that we benefit from that competition. Americans are capitalists. It’s a competition. What we want to do is to get the best deal for the people of this country,” he said.
Bah stressed that the government’s priority should not be limited to attracting foreign capital, but to securing measurable benefits for Sierra Leoneans from any investment deals.
His remarks come as the United States signals stronger commercial and strategic interest in Sierra Leone, with focus on critical minerals, energy and infrastructure projects.
