Thousands of Sierra Leoneans with British heritage may now qualify for a new UK immigration route that allows them to live and work in Britain for up to five years, with the option to settle permanently.
The UK’s Ancestry Visa, available to citizens of 22 African Commonwealth countries including Sierra Leone, offers eligible applicants the right to work, run a business, and undertake voluntary work in the UK.
To qualify, applicants must be aged 17 and above, be Commonwealth citizens, and prove that at least one grandparent was born in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or Isle of Man. They must also show they can support themselves financially and intend to work.
After five years of continuous residence, successful visa holders can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, putting them on track for permanent settlement.
For Sierra Leone, officials and tourism stakeholders say the visa presents more than just a migration opportunity. It could deepen ties between the home country and its diaspora, and unlock new potential for investment, cultural diplomacy and tourism.
“Greater mobility will strengthen connections between Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad,” a tourism source noted. “It can also drive investment in heritage tourism and cultural initiatives.”
Stakeholders point to sites like Bunce Island and major events such as the One Nation Reggae Festival as areas that could benefit from diaspora ambassadors promoting Sierra Leone abroad. The hospitality and creative industries are also expected to gain if stronger diaspora links lead to more visits, collaborations and investment.
Tourism and diaspora groups are now calling on the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, diaspora organisations and other relevant institutions to work together to educate eligible Sierra Leoneans about the requirements and benefits of the scheme.
As Sierra Leone pushes to diversify its economy and grow its tourism sector, analysts say leveraging historic links with the UK through the Ancestry Visa could position the country as a key heritage destination while strengthening its global diaspora network.
