FREETOWN — The National Revenue Authority has begun nationwide distribution of new Smart Goods and Services Tax machines in a major push to modernise tax collection and block revenue leakages across Sierra Leone.
The rollout targets 10,000 GST-registered businesses and is designed to work alongside the existing Electronic Cash Register system. The Authority says the new devices will ensure accurate electronic recording of taxable transactions, strengthen record-keeping, and improve compliance.
Speaking during the distribution and sensitisation exercise, NRA Commissioner General Abu Martin Kanneh described the initiative as a key part of the Authority’s domestic revenue mobilisation strategy.
“The Smart GST machines will benefit businesses and the Government by promoting accurate record-keeping, strengthening compliance and building customer confidence,” Kanneh stated.
He said the machines would also provide benefits to both businesses and Government by promoting accurate transaction records and strengthening customer confidence in the tax system.
NRA officials are currently engaging business operators across the country to explain how the machines work. The Authority confirmed that sensitisation and technical support will continue throughout the rollout period.
Kanneh called on journalists and media practitioners to help raise public awareness, and urged consumers to play their part by always requesting valid GST receipts when making taxable purchases.
The Authority further reminded all GST-registered businesses of their legal obligation to use the machines correctly and to issue proper receipts for every taxable transaction.
The nationwide deployment forms part of broader NRA reforms aimed at digitising tax administration, improving transparency, and ensuring that all taxable sales are properly captured to boost domestic revenue.
