FREETOWN — Learning conditions for more than 1,300 pupils at the National Islamic Mission School in Up Town Bar, East End of Freetown, have been significantly improved following the construction and handover of a new school facility supported by ActionAid Sierra Leone.
The facility, which was officially handed over on Friday, October 2, 2026, comprises three classrooms, a computer room and modern toilet facilities.
According to ActionAid Sierra Leone, the project was driven by women belonging to a community Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA), who mobilised their own resources, prepared a Bill of Quantities and engaged a contractor for the construction.
ActionAid Sierra Leone, in partnership with Women in Crisis, supported the initiative by providing construction materials and covering contractor fees.
The school currently serves 758 primary pupils and 615 secondary students, who have been struggling with overcrowded conditions.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, ActionAid Sierra Leone’s Head of Programme and Policy said improving education requires more than physical infrastructure, emphasising the need for trained teachers, adequate learning materials and sustained support.
Representatives of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, school authorities and community members pledged to take ownership of the facility and ensure it is properly maintained and protected for future generations.
ActionAid said the project demonstrates how community-led initiatives can contribute to sustainable development when local people are empowered to identify needs and participate directly in delivering solutions.
