BIO MEETS POPE LEO XIV AT VATICAN; TALKS PEACE, MIGRATION, FOOD SECURITY

VATICAN CITY — President Julius Maada Bio on Thursday held talks with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, with discussions centred on peace, migration, youth, food security and development.

President Bio was received by the Pope and later met with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by Monsignor Mihăiţă Blaj, Under-Secretary for Relations with States.

In a statement, the Holy See Press Office said the talks highlighted the cordial bilateral relations between Sierra Leone and the Holy See and recognised the contribution of the Catholic Church to national development in Sierra Leone.

The discussions also focused on environmental and food-related emergencies linked to migration, as well as broader social challenges affecting communities, with particular emphasis on young people.

According to the Vatican, both sides underscored the importance of working together to promote peace and advance projects in education and development.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

President Bio’s audience with Pope Leo XIV marks a major diplomatic and religious engagement for Sierra Leone, bringing to the Vatican high-level issues around youth, migration, education and sustainable development.

The Vatican described the discussions as cordial and reaffirmed the significance of the longstanding relationship between Sierra Leone and the Catholic Church.
