FREETOWN — The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has launched a full-scale investigation into tremors that shook parts of Freetown on Tuesday, 13th October 2026, suspected to have been triggered by offshore earthquakes along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

In a public notice issued Tuesday, the NDMA said it has engaged the Sierra Leone Institution of Geoscientists (SLIG) to determine whether the shaking experienced across the capital was connected to two offshore quakes measuring 6.7 and 6.8 magnitude recorded by international seismic monitoring agencies along the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

The Agency said scientific verification is still needed to establish a direct link, and has therefore constituted a Technical Working Group comprising NDMA, SLIG and the Ministry of Works and Public Assets to investigate the incident and make safety recommendations.

A joint assessment team on Tuesday visited several locations where tremors were reported, including Africell’s Head Office at Wilberforce, Youyi Building, the Independent Media Commission building, Aureol Insurance Company and other buildings along Siaka Stevens Street, as well as the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs.

According to the NDMA, the initial assessment found no evidence of major structural damage, significant property destruction or fatalities at any of the locations visited.

The Agency said further technical investigations will be conducted to establish the exact cause of the tremors and to advise the public on necessary safety measures.

The NDMA has urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue.
