On January 6, 2025, Abdul Fatoma, Chief Executive of the Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI), hosted a pivotal meeting with key representatives from the European Union (EU) Delegation in Sierra Leone at the CHRDI office in Freetown.
The meeting included the Deputy Head of the EU Delegation and the Programme Manager for Governance and Civil Society. Discussions primarily focused on critical issues surrounding human rights and democracy, with both parties emphasizing the universality and indivisibility of human rights. A significant topic on the agenda was CHRDI’s upcoming Civic Space initiative, which aims to promote active citizen engagement and safeguard civil liberties.
Fatoma expressed optimism about establishing a robust partnership with the EU in Sierra Leone, highlighting the mutual benefits that such collaboration could yield in advancing human rights and governance. “We look forward to working closely with the EU Delegation in Sierra Leone on these crucial issues,” he stated.
The meeting was characterized as productive, laying the groundwork for future joint efforts between CHRDI and the EU to enhance human rights advocacy and governance in Sierra Leone. This collaboration marks a significant step in reinforcing democratic values and ensuring the protection of human rights in the region.
