The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED) of Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is set to establish a sanitary pad factory in Kono.

This initiative was revealed during a recent engagement between MoPED and ECOWAS Sierra Leone Commissioner, Professor Fatou Sow Sahr. The discussions focused on the successful implementation of the factory in Eastern Sierra Leone.

Salimata Thim, ECOWAS’s Principal Programme Officer for Gender, underscored the significance of the factory and urged for innovative and proactive strategies to ensure the project’s success. “Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal will jointly oversee the project,” Thim stated, highlighting its role in promoting women’s empowerment across the region.

MoPED Minister Kenyeh Barlay expressed appreciation for ECOWAS’s efforts in Sierra Leone, committing her ministry to fully support the project. “We aim to align this initiative with Sierra Leone’s Medium-term National Development Plan (2024-2030) and the ECOWAS Big Five Game Changers,” Barlay said.

She also noted that the factory would create job opportunities for youth, contributing to broader youth empowerment efforts. Barlay reaffirmed MoPED’s commitment to coordinating the project in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender and other key stakeholders. This initiative aligns with ECOWAS’s goals for women’s economic empowerment, coinciding with the organization’s 50th anniversary.
