Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE has officially announced her intention to seek the flag bearer position of the All People’s Congress (APC) Party in the upcoming 2028 elections. This declaration comes as she aims to transition from municipal leadership to a national political office.
In a recent interview, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr confirmed her candidacy, expressing confidence in her ability to lead the APC. “Yes, I am vying for the leadership of the political party that I’m humble to serve and to be a part of, proud to be a part of,” she stated.
“And I believe that by God’s grace—because as we all know, power comes from God—if it is his will and with the support of the party that I love and the people who vote for that party, I am optimistic about our chances in this internal election,” she added.
Aki-Sawyerr’s track record as Mayor of Freetown showcases her leadership capabilities. Having served two terms, she has garnered recognition for her strong governance and commitment to development, both within the APC and for the citizens of Sierra Leone. Her tenure has focused on improving urban infrastructure, enhancing community services, and addressing pressing issues in the capital.
Her announcement marks a significant development in the lead-up to the 2028 elections, signaling her ambition and readiness to take on larger challenges within the national political landscape. The APC’s internal election process will ultimately determine whether she secures the party’s nomination for the presidential race.
As the political climate evolves, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s candidacy positions her as a key figure to watch in the upcoming electoral contest.
