Parliament Enacts Professional Social Workers Regulatory Council Act 2025

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has officially enacted the “Professional Social Workers Regulatory Council Act 2025.” The law was passed on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, following extensive amendments and discussions.

Presented by Hon. Abdul Sullaman Marray, Chairman of the Legislative Committee, the bill was initially introduced on April 24, 2025. After thorough debate and subsequent amendments, it received final approval during its third reading.

The newly enacted legislation establishes the Professional Social Workers Regulatory Council, responsible for regulating professional social workers, social work facilities, organizations, and institutions throughout Sierra Leone. The council will oversee licensing, registration, and disciplinary actions, addressing various matters to enhance the social work profession in the country.

Members of Parliament emphasized the bill’s significance for the workforce, noting its potential to improve standards and practices within the social work sector. The bill was championed by the Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, who highlighted its importance in creating a professional framework for social workers in Sierra Leone.
