The Freetown City Council, led by Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr and Deputy Mayor Kweku Lisk, Esq., has initiated significant construction projects aimed at enhancing public safety, preserving community dignity, and improving educational infrastructure throughout the city.

This initiative includes the construction of new perimeter walls at key locations, specifically targeting cemeteries and schools as part of the council’s broader “TransformFreetown – Transforming Lives” development plan.

Among the projects, new perimeter walls are being erected at Ascension Town Cemetery and the D.T. Akibo-Betts Junior and Senior Secondary School in Tower Hill. These constructions follow the recent completion of a 304-meter wall at Kissy Road Cemetery, built at a cost of approximately 1.3 million New Leones in taxpayer funds. This wall provides a secure and dignified boundary for one of Freetown’s oldest burial sites, aimed at enhancing security and preventing vandalism.

The Ascension Town Cemetery will receive a 126-meter-long perimeter wall at a cost of 226,000 New Leones, further reinforcing the community’s commitment to maintaining respectful memorial sites. Additionally, the D.T. Akibo-Betts Junior and Senior Secondary School will benefit from a new 210-meter fence, built at a cost of 715,000 New Leones. This project is crucial for enhancing safety and security within the school environment.

During the commissioning ceremony, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr and Deputy Mayor Lisk underscored the importance of infrastructure development in promoting community well-being and dignity. The event was attended by community leaders, stakeholders, and residents, who expressed their gratitude for the council’s dedication to improving local facilities.

The Freetown City Council stated that the successful completion of these projects marks significant progress in urban development and community empowerment, reflecting a commitment to fostering a thriving community through investment in essential infrastructure.
