A captivating event unfolded over the coastal town of Lungi, Port Loko District, as multiple witnesses reported seeing a bright streak descending from the skies during midday on Friday, June 6, 2025.
Renowned content creator Hamza was among the first to draw attention to the phenomenon, stating, “Three hours ago, something just fell from the skies in Sierra Leone—landing in Lungi. What could it be? Just captured it.”
Adding to the intrigue, residents in the capital, Freetown, also observed the unusual sight. Prominent journalist and political figure Sylvia Olayinka Blyden confirmed her experience, saying, “I saw the pathway left in the skies this evening while seated on my verandah at Cockle Bay. It resembled the jet stream left in the clouds by arriving and departing planes. However, that’s not the path planes use to arrive at Lungi, so I was really intrigued. The stream went over my roof and towards Lungi. Very bizarre.”
The reports have stirred widespread curiosity among local residents, many of whom claimed to have witnessed the event. Speculation about the nature of the streak has been abundant, with several possible explanations emerging.
Experts suggest that the bright line could be a meteor entering the Earth’s atmosphere. As meteors burn up upon entry, they create a dazzling effect akin to a shooting star.
Another possibility is that the streak originated from defunct satellites or space debris re-entering the atmosphere, which can also produce a bright trail as they disintegrate. Some theorize that the sighting might be a reflection of artificial lights from aircraft, drones, or even laser shows.
Local authorities have yet to provide an official statement regarding the event, leaving many to wonder about the true nature of what they witnessed.
