The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Sierra Leone has successfully initiated the return of Le3 billion, approximately 1 million new Leones, stolen from the Freetown City Council.

In a ceremony held yesterday at the ACC’s office, a cheque was presented to Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr and the Chief Administrator, marking a significant milestone in the recovery efforts.

This recovery follows an extensive investigation that uncovered a complex collusion between certain City Council staff and bank employees. As a result, administrative sanctions have been imposed, and potential legal action is being considered against the primary ringleader involved in the theft.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed her profound gratitude to the ACC for their swift and professional efforts, which led to the full recovery of the stolen funds. She announced that the recovered money would be allocated toward a special project for the Council, referring to it as a form of “savings” restored despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the theft.

Emphasizing the importance of accountability in governance, the ACC Commissioner reiterated President Bio’s message: “Together we can make Sierra Leone rise through accountability and focused delivery.”
