On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the Tzu Chi Foundation, in partnership with Caritas Freetown, initiated a six-day cleaning and sensitization campaign targeting three major slum communities in Freetown: Kroo Bay, Dwarzark, and Susan’s Bay. The campaign will run daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Sunday, July 20, focusing on enhancing disaster preparedness and environmental sanitation as the rainy season intensifies.

Approximately 45 volunteers have been mobilized at each site, working under the guidance of Community Disaster Committees (CDCs). To facilitate these efforts, the Tzu Chi Foundation has supplied essential cleaning tools and protective gear, including shovels, wheelbarrows, rakes, gloves, rain boots, and raincoats. Additionally, a vehicle from the Freetown City Council is being utilized to disseminate vital messages about waste disposal and disaster risk reduction throughout the communities.

This campaign marks the third cleaning initiative conducted by the Tzu Chi Foundation in these neighborhoods over the past three years. In addition to the cleaning efforts, the Foundation has provided grants to local leaders and residents to support long-term resilience and community development.

A representative from Tzu Chi emphasized the importance of assessing the impact of previous campaigns and encouraged volunteers to focus on cleaning critical infrastructure such as drainage systems and public spaces. “Maintaining a clean environment is essential for our collective safety, particularly during the rainy season,” the representative stated.

Residents were educated on proper waste disposal practices and were urged to care for the cleaning tools provided, ensuring their reuse for future community projects. Many community members expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting the necessity for continued support. “With the heavy rains, waste from the city often flows into our neighborhoods. Ongoing cleaning efforts are vital,” one resident remarked.
