Monday, July 28, 2025, Cambridge, UK — The Vice Chancellor and Principal of Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU), Professor Philip John Kanu, recently held a high-level meeting with senior officials at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Cambridge, UK. This visit aimed to enhance international collaboration and develop research-driven solutions to address national challenges.

During his time at ARU’s Chelmsford Campus, Professor Kanu met with Dr. Robin Gowers, head of the Writtle School of Agriculture, and was given a tour of the university’s experimental farm and greenhouses, where postgraduate students are engaged in innovative agricultural research.

Discussions primarily centered on potential partnerships focused on research and capacity building for MMTU lecturers, particularly in agriculture, engineering, health, and education. Professor Kanu visited several faculties at ARU, including the Faculty of Business and Law, the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Social Care.

A notable highlight of the meeting was a proposed collaborative research initiative aimed at addressing the rising threat of substance abuse in Sierra Leone, particularly concerning drugs such as Kush and tramadol, which have a devastating impact on youth, agriculture, and the national economy. Professor Kanu underscored the urgency of the issue and expressed MMTU’s commitment to partnering with ARU to develop evidence-based solutions.

This engagement marks a significant step toward fostering global academic partnerships and advancing research that addresses pressing societal issues in Sierra Leone.
