A heavy downpour in the early hours of Thursday, July 31st, 2025, has led to severe flooding in the Kroo Bay community, causing water to surge into homes and resulting in significant property damage. Residents are grappling with the aftermath as they work to safeguard their families and belongings from the floodwaters.
Kroo Bay is a coastal community located in Freetown, Sierra Leone, known for its vibrant culture and close-knit atmosphere. The area is characterized by colorful houses and a bustling market life but faces numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure and vulnerability to environmental issues like flooding. Historically, it has been a settlement for various groups, including the Kroo people, renowned for their fishing and seafaring traditions. However, rapid urbanization has led to overcrowding and increased pressure on resources.
Images shared on social media reveal the extent of the flooding, with many homes surrounded by water and valuable possessions destroyed. Daily activities have been disrupted, leaving residents in distress as they navigate the challenging conditions. Fortunately, as of the time of reporting, there have been no confirmed fatalities.
In the midst of this crisis, three residents shared their urgent pleas for government assistance in an exclusive interview with Daily Scope.
Kadijatu Kamara, a mother of four, expressed her fears: “We have lost so much. The water came in so quickly; we couldn’t save anything. My children are scared, and I don’t know where to turn for help. We need urgent assistance to rebuild our lives. The government must step in now.”
Sorie Fofanah, a local shopkeeper, shared his concerns: “This flooding has destroyed my shop and my family’s livelihood. I don’t know how we will recover from this. We are pleading with the authorities to provide support and relief to those affected. We can’t do this alone.”
Mabity Kargbo, a businesswoman and single mother of three, added her voice to the chorus of desperation: “As a single parent, I struggle daily to provide for my kids. This disaster has taken everything from us. I urge the government to respond swiftly. We need food, shelter, and financial support to get back on our feet.”
The residents of Kroo Bay have called on local authorities to actively respond to the situation, emphasizing the urgency of their needs. As the community grapples with the challenges posed by the devastating flood, their voices ring out, pleading for the help they so desperately need.
