Two Men Remanded For Treason

Two accused persons Alie Badara Kanu alias Captain Makeni and Thaimu Bangma made another appearance before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at court No.2 Pademba, Road Freetown. They appeared on charges of treason, in contravention to the laws of Sierra Leone.

According to the particulars of offence, they are arraigned on two counts, Treason and Misprision of Treason. The overt act stated that on a date unknown between June 2023 to March 2024, the accused persons engaged in subversive acts to overthrow the legitimate government by unlawful means.

The charge sheet indicated that the two accused persons were members of a Whats’App Group called Movement for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD). They conspired with unknown person to recruit armed forces personnel, police officer, and ex-service men, to overthrow the government. 

The charge sheet further stated that the accused persons intended to purchase arms and ammunition to embark on the coup plot together with other co-conspirators.

During the deliberation, defense counsel Chernor Kamara made an application for the accused persons to be granted bail, and said the prosecution has delayed the trial. The Magistrate confirmed statement to be true, but he refused bail application due to the seriousness of the matter. The matter has been adjourned to 21st August, 2024.
