In a significant display of bilateral cooperation, the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone has donated critical surveillance equipment to the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to enhance the country’s “Safe City” Project. The formal ceremony, attended by senior officials and representatives from law enforcement, showcased the donation, which includes 45 CCTV cameras, three Huawei monitors, and three Lenovo laptops, all sourced from China.

During the event, Hon. Zhang Diabin, a representative of the Chinese Embassy, underscored the importance of these contributions for public safety. “These items will empower the SLP to implement its ‘Safe City’ Project by establishing comprehensive CCTV systems nationwide,” he stated, adding that this gesture underscores China’s commitment to promoting peace, security, and the welfare of Sierra Leonean citizens.

Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, expressed heartfelt thanks on behalf of the SLP, acknowledging China’s enduring support, which dates back to Sierra Leone’s civil war. He highlighted the “Safe City” Project, initiated in 2014 and revitalized under President Julius Maada Bio, aimed at bolstering crime prevention efforts across the country. IG Sellu revealed that over 36 surveillance cameras have already been installed in Freetown, particularly at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital, in response to alarming incidents of child theft.

The Inspector General further noted that the newly donated equipment will enhance the police’s capacity to monitor all six police regions effectively. He also commended China for its contributions to the media sector and for providing advanced training opportunities for Sierra Leonean officers. “This substantial support from China will enable us to better ensure the safety of our citizens,” IG Sellu remarked, expressing optimism that the enhanced surveillance network will lead to a decrease in crime rates in the near future.

The ceremony concluded with the formal signing and handover of the donated items, marking a pivotal moment in the strengthening of Sierra Leone-China relations.
