Kenema, August 20, 2025 — The Kenema City Council, in collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone, the World Bank, and various partners, held a crucial meeting with local traders on August 20, 2025, to discuss the Resilient Urban Sierra Leone Project (RUSLP).

The focus of the engagement was the public disclosure of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) reports concerning the planned upgrade of the Kenema Central Market. This significant project aims to enhance the market’s infrastructure, providing space for 1,800 traders, along with modern office facilities, parking lots, and other amenities.

Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of September 2025 and is expected to last one year and six months. During this period, all traders will be temporarily relocated to a designated area in Forestry. To facilitate this transition, registered traders will receive token financial support to assist with the relocation process.

The upgrade of the Kenema Central Market represents a vital investment in the region’s economic development and aims to improve the trading environment for local vendors.
