On August 21, 2025, the Ghanaian High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Senator Yawlui, paid a courtesy visit to Freetown’s Mayor, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, at her office. The meeting aimed to strengthen bilateral ties between Ghana and Sierra Leone, emphasizing the importance of regional collaboration and development.
During the discussions, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr and High Commissioner Yawlui explored potential joint initiatives designed to boost economic growth, promote cultural exchange, and enhance regional stability. “We emphasized the significance of regional cooperation in addressing development and cultural issues at both national and sub-national levels,” Mayor Aki-Sawyerr remarked. She also highlighted Freetown’s enduring partnership with Accra, noting that both cities are active members of the C40 Cities network, which focuses on combating climate change.
In a related engagement earlier that day, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr met with representatives from the Australian High Commission, led by Counsellor for Climate Change, Daniel Featherston. They discussed Freetown City Council’s Climate Action Plan and the challenges of securing adequate financing to implement it effectively.
This visit underscores the commitment of both Ghana and Sierra Leone to fostering collaborative efforts that address shared challenges and opportunities for growth.
