A police sergeant and his girlfriend are currently in custody after being charged with several drug-related offenses stemming from a significant cannabis seizure in Kenema.
Sergeant Augustine Tamba Saffa, 35, and his girlfriend, Isha Conteh, a petty trader, appeared before Magistrate Mustapha Braima Jah at Pademba Road Court No.1 on Wednesday. They faced four charges related to the possession and distribution of cannabis sativa.
According to court documents, on September 1, 2025, law enforcement officials discovered 799 wraps of cannabis sativa in Sergeant Saffa’s possession at Yakama Street, New Site, Kenema. The prosecution alleged that he was not only in possession of the narcotic but was also “actively involved in the illegal trade of the prohibited substance without lawful authority.”
In a related charge, Isha Conteh was reportedly found with three parcels of cannabis sativa and is accused of engaging in distribution activities.
The courtroom atmosphere grew tense as the charges were presented. Since the case remains at the preliminary investigation stage, no plea was entered by the defendants.
Citing the gravity of the offenses, Magistrate Jah denied bail, ordering that both Sergeant Saffa and Ms. Conteh be remanded at the Male and Female Correctional Centers in Freetown, respectively.
