13th October 2025 – The Sierra Leone Chef Association has celebrated a significant milestone by presenting three prestigious awards and five medals to the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, following the nation’s outstanding performance at the 2025 West African Food Festival (WAFFEST) held in Accra, Ghana. The awards ceremony took place in the Ministry’s Conference Room, where the association shared their success story and expressed gratitude for the Ministry’s unwavering support.

Among the accolades received were the titles of Best Country Cuisine of Africa and Best Dessert Plating, underscoring Sierra Leone’s burgeoning reputation in the culinary landscape of Africa.

Chef Keinesse, President of the Association, lauded the collective effort of chefs, apprentices, and supporters who represented the country with distinction. He emphasized that their victory not only showcased Sierra Leone’s rich culinary heritage but also highlighted innovative presentation techniques that captivated judges and participants from across the continent. This achievement reaffirms Sierra Leone’s emerging status in Africa’s gastronomic scene.

Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, received the awards on behalf of the team and commended their efforts in showcasing Sierra Leone’s culinary excellence. She congratulated the chefs for elevating the national image and assured them of the Ministry’s continued support in promoting culinary tourism. The Minister also urged the association to prepare diligently for the upcoming UN Tourism Regional Gastronomy Forum for Africa 2026, which will be hosted in Sierra Leone.

The success at WAFFEST has positioned Sierra Leone as a burgeoning hub for gastronomy and tourism. Through effective cultural representation, strategic networking, and international recognition, the Chef Association is actively advancing the nation’s culinary brand, drawing attention and opportunities within the African food and hospitality sector.
