Sierra Leone Police Making an arrest

By Joseph Momoh, Daily Scope Reporter

Makeni, Sierra Leone Three individuals have been arrested and charged with drug-related offenses following a police operation at the Sahara Hotel in Makeni. The accused Janet Mariama Kamara, a surveyor; Thaimu Kargbo, a civil engineer; and Abu Bakarr Conteh, a businessman made their initial court appearance on Wednesday, October 4, 2025, before Magistrate Mustapha Briama Jah at Pademba Road Court No. 2 in Freetown.

The charges against them allege that they were found in possession of thirty-seven half-filled polythene bags containing cannabis, commonly known as Kush, without lawful authority. They face two counts under the National Drug Control Act of 2008 and the Criminal Procedure Act No. 8 of 2024: possession of a prohibited drug and dealing in a prohibited drug.

During the proceedings, no plea was entered on behalf of the defendants. State prosecutor A.B.N. Taylor Kamara requested a brief adjournment to prepare evidence and serve the defense with the necessary documentation.

Defense counsel Z. Denkch Esq. applied for bail, arguing that the defendants are residents of Sierra Leone within the court’s jurisdiction and have reliable sureties available to guarantee their appearance. He assured the court that the accused would attend all future hearings, invoking Section 76(1)(3) of the Criminal Procedure Act.

The case has been adjourned to a later date to allow the prosecution to finalize preparations, with a ruling on the bail application expected at the next court session.
