REYKJAVIK, Iceland Hon. Dr. Isata Mahoi, Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, has engaged in a pivotal meeting with Iceland’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Borgarður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, to enhance bilateral cooperation on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

This meeting marked a significant advancement in global gender advocacy as Minister Gunnarsdóttir formally invited Dr. Mahoi to serve as Co-Chair at the upcoming Global Forum for Women Leaders. The invitation highlights Sierra Leone’s increasing prominence in promoting gender-inclusive policies and advancing women’s leadership internationally.

The two ministers discussed several critical topics, including the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda, economic empowerment, and human capital development. Dr. Mahoi emphasized Sierra Leone’s commitment to supporting women entrepreneurs through its national development strategy, the Five Big Game Changers, which prioritizes human capital development.

“Sierra Leone is committed to building inclusive systems that empower women economically and socially,” Dr. Mahoi stated. “Partnerships like this one with Iceland are essential to accelerating progress on gender equality.”

Minister Gunnarsdóttir expressed Iceland’s eagerness to deepen collaboration with Sierra Leone in areas such as entrepreneurship, education, and peacebuilding. Both leaders agreed to explore joint initiatives aimed at increasing women’s participation in decision-making processes and bolstering institutional frameworks for gender equity.

The meeting reinforced the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs’ commitment to forging global partnerships that advocate for the rights of women and children. As both nations strive to set a positive example, their collaboration exemplifies a strong commitment to inclusive development and international solidarity.
