NRA Urges Tax Compliance Ahead of Festive Season

By Kadijatu Bangura

Freetown, 19th November 2025 In a timely announcement, the National Revenue Authority (NRA) has released a public notice calling on all taxpayers to remain diligent in fulfilling their tax obligations as the festive season approaches.

The notice, issued by the NRA’s Domestic Tax Department (DTD), comes with warm seasonal greetings and appreciation for the contributions of Sierra Leoneans to national development. The Commissioner General highlighted the essential role of taxpayers in funding vital public services, stating, “Your taxes help strengthen public services that benefit every citizen.” This acknowledgment serves as a reminder of the collective impact that tax compliance has on building infrastructure, equipping hospitals, and improving educational facilities.

As the festive period typically sees increased economic activity, the NRA outlined specific obligations for businesses and individual taxpayers. Among these, all businesses are required to issue Goods and Services Tax (GST) receipts for every sale using the approved Electronic Cash Register (ECR) system. To reinforce compliance, the NRA has deployed mystery shoppers and business supervisors to monitor transactions throughout this busy period.

Moreover, the NRA emphasized the importance of proper handling of excisable goods. Traders and consumers dealing in alcohol, soft drinks, tobacco, bottled water, and other excisable products must ensure that all goods are properly stamped with the official Excise Stamp, indicating that duties have been paid. The authority cautioned that selling unstamped goods is illegal and could lead to penalties or confiscation of products.

Event organizers and promoters were also reminded of their responsibilities, particularly to register their events and pay applicable GST on ticket sales and proceeds at the gate. To ensure compliance, NRA officers will work in conjunction with the Sierra Leone Police to monitor these activities, thus facilitating smooth and uninterrupted celebrations.

In closing its notice, the NRA urged all taxpayers, traders, and business owners to celebrate responsibly while fulfilling their tax commitments. The authority reiterated that compliance not only bolsters the national economy but also ensures equitable contributions from all citizens.

The announcement ended with heartfelt seasonal greetings from the Commissioner General, thanking taxpayers for their cooperation throughout the year and wishing all Sierra Leoneans a joyful, peaceful, and prosperous festive season.
