A tragic confrontation on Wednesday morning at Lungi International Airport resulted in the shooting death of Warrant Officer Class I Moses Brima Kabba, commander of the Presidential Guard, over a $100 tip.
The incident occurred around 10:00 AM when Corporal Steven, a subordinate officer, allegedly opened fire on WOI Kabba following a dispute regarding the distribution of a monetary token provided by the Vice President just prior to his departure.
Eyewitnesses report that tensions escalated when Corporal Steven accused his superior of withholding the funds, which are traditionally shared among unit members. This practice of receiving tips from high-ranking officials during official trips has previously led to friction among the guards.
After the shooting, Corporal Steven fled the scene with his service weapon but was apprehended later the same day during a coordinated manhunt by the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP). He remains in military custody as investigations continue. The RSLAF has described Corporal Steven’s actions as stemming from “indiscipline” and had initially issued a statement announcing him as a wanted suspect.
The body of WOI Kabba has since been transferred to the mortuary at Lungi Government Hospital.
This shocking event has ignited widespread condemnation on social media, with users expressing disbelief at the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Vickie Remoe remarked, “Really shocked to hear that a soldier killed a colleague over a $100 tip… May Allah push that kind of desperation for money far.” Another user, Sarah Kally, expressed her dismay, stating, “A life lost for SLL100/$100 allegedly. Only in #magicsalone.”
As of now, authorities have yet to provide an official statement regarding the detailed motives or circumstances leading to this tragic act.
