In a collaborative effort to honor International Human Rights Day, the European Union Delegation in Sierra Leone partnered with International IDEA Africa & West Asia and BBC Media Action Sierra Leone, gathering civil society organizations (CSOs) from across the nation.

The event provided a platform for various stakeholders to celebrate significant strides made in human rights advocacy while addressing the ongoing challenges within Sierra Leone’s civic environment. Participants shared valuable experiences and shed light on their efforts to promote and protect fundamental rights, emphasizing the essential role of grassroots organizations in safeguarding civic freedoms and fostering inclusive governance.

Ambassador Jacek Jankowski conveyed the European Union’s steadfast support for human rights defenders in Sierra Leone, stating, “The EU remains committed to preserving civic space, advancing democratic principles, and supporting the critical work of civil society organizations. We stand firmly with those dedicated to protecting human rights. Together, we can ensure that civic space remains open, vibrant, and resilient.”

The collaboration with International IDEA and BBC Media Action highlights the significance of partnerships in the human rights arena. By merging international expertise with local insights, the initiative demonstrates how collective action can enhance democratic institutions and empower communities to uphold their rights.

As Sierra Leone confronts complex social and political dynamics, this commemoration serves as a call for solidarity, dialogue, and resilience. The European Union’s engagement with civil society reflects its broader mission to foster inclusive development and democratic governance throughout Africa and beyond.
