Media Collaboration Essential for Census Data: December 1, 2026

Freetown, Sierra Leone. In a strategic move to enhance public awareness for the upcoming 2026 Population and Housing Census, Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) hosted a high-level meeting with radio presenters, continuity announcers, and DJs from across the nation. The event aimed to foster collaboration between media professionals and Stats SL’s Directorate of Communication and Public Relations.

During the meeting, discussions centered on communication objectives for the census and the vital role media practitioners play in national development initiatives. Participants explored innovative strategies to encourage census participation among key demographics, including youth, rural populations, peri-urban communities, and vulnerable groups. Valuable insights and recommendations were shared to strengthen partnerships for the success of Census 2026.

Samuel Ansumana, Director of Communication and Public Relations, emphasized the influential role of media professionals in shaping public perception and raising awareness on crucial national topics. He noted that radio presenters and DJs serve as essential platforms for youth engagement and community outreach. Ansumana expressed the meeting’s goal of reinforcing collaboration with media influencers in preparation for Census 2026 and the accompanying cartographic mapping exercise.

Census Night is slated for December 1, 2026, with enumeration activities scheduled from December 2 to 14, 2026.

Abdulai Salia Brima, National Census Coordinator, reiterated the census’s significance in gathering essential data on population characteristics and living conditions. This data will facilitate effective planning and development by the government and its partners, contributing to improvements in infrastructure, education, and overall socio-economic growth. Brima called on media practitioners to work jointly in promoting the census and its objectives.
