Dr. Moses Tiffa Baio, the Chief Immigration Officer of Sierra Leone, emphasized that “a passport is primarily a travel document, not necessarily proof of nationality” as he announced significant reforms at the Immigration Department aimed at modernizing services and improving passport delivery. These changes include plans to transition the agency to a paramilitary structure to bolster border management.

In an exclusive interview, Dr. Tiffa Baio explained that he was tasked by President Julius Maada Bio to enhance immigration services across the country following his appointment in March.

“Globally, immigration operates under a paramilitary model due to its crucial role in border control. We aim to adopt this system to improve our operational efficiency,” he stated.

Addressing concerns about passport processing delays, Dr. Tiffa Baio assured the public that the time required to obtain a passport has been reduced to just two weeks, with passports now readily available. The cost remains at $100, converted to its equivalent in Leones.

He also clarified the eligibility criteria for obtaining a passport, noting that it can be issued to individuals granted citizenship by presidential authority, naturalized citizens, children of Sierra Leonean descent born abroad, and foreign nationals working in Sierra Leonean diplomatic missions.

Dr. Tiffa Baio encouraged citizens to reach out directly to the Immigration Office for accurate information and guidance. “Our office is open to the public, and we welcome inquiries. We are committed to providing transparent and efficient service,” he concluded.
