Francis Ben Kaifala, Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), has ignited a significant debate regarding the potential reintroduction of the death penalty for those involved in the importation and distribution of kush, a potent synthetic drug that is devastating communities in Sierra Leone.
In a recent post on his verified Facebook account, Commissioner Kaifala referred to kush as a “killer” and called for unified action to shield the nation’s youth from its harmful impact. He posed a provocative question to the public: “Should we consider the death penalty for its importers and traders?”
His remarks, while not a formal proposal, reflect a growing frustration among citizens and officials alike about the escalating crisis linked to kush, which has been associated with increasing mental health issues, crime rates, and tragic losses of young lives.
As the country grapples with the challenges of drug trafficking and substance abuse, Kaifala’s statement has prompted a renewed discussion on the severity of measures necessary to combat this pressing issue.
