Minister of Agriculture Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka recently visited the Mamuntha and Magbass rice farms in the Tonkolili District as part of his nationwide field tour leading up to this year’s World Food Day celebration and the second anniversary of the Feed Salone initiative.

During his visit, Dr. Kpaka engaged with farmer Bisman Kamara, who is cultivating more than 500 hectares of rice at Mamuntha. Kamara’s farm is projected to yield approximately four metric tons per hectare, equating to around 80 bags.

The Minister highlighted Kamara’s transition from smallholder to large-scale farming as a testament to the effectiveness of the Food System Resilience Program (FSRP) under the Feed Salone initiative, which aims to enhance Sierra Leone’s rice self-sufficiency.

Dr. Kpaka praised Kamara for his significant achievements and encouraged him to further expand his operations. He assured that the Ministry will continue to provide support, including modern machinery such as combine harvesters, to enhance productivity and minimize post-harvest losses.

In response, Kamara urged Sierra Leoneans to recognize agriculture as a viable and sustainable business opportunity. He expressed gratitude to the Ministry and its partners for the support that enabled him to scale up his rice farming efforts.
