Freetown, Sierra Leone On November 3, 2025, the Embassy of Algeria celebrated the 71st Anniversary of the Liberation Revolution in Freetown, with Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Timothy Kabba, serving as the guest speaker.
Ambassador Abdelhafid Hachem of Algeria highlighted the significance of the event, noting the shared historical struggles of both Algeria and Sierra Leone against colonial oppression. “This historical solidarity continues to shape and strengthen our partnership,” he stated.
Over the past 54 years, Algeria and Sierra Leone have fostered a bilateral relationship characterized by cooperation, solidarity, and mutual respect. Ambassador Hachem emphasized that these enduring ties lay the groundwork for their joint commitment to peace, development, and progress. He pointed to President Julius Maada Bio’s visit to Algeria in January 2024 as pivotal in enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in the realm of economic cooperation, which culminated in the signing of a joint communiqué.
The recent reopening of the Algerian Embassy in Freetown, he noted, symbolizes a renewed dedication to closer ties. The ambassador also mentioned the shared presence of both nations at the United Nations Security Council, which facilitates collaboration on regional and international issues.
Furthermore, Ambassador Hachem reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s education sector through scholarships and training opportunities aimed at human capital development.
In his address, Minister Kabba underscored the anniversary as a powerful symbol of the Algerian people’s resilience and determination in their fight for freedom. “It serves as a proud reminder of Algeria’s steadfast commitment to sovereignty, self-determination, and social progress—values that continue to inspire the African continent,” he said.
Kabba remarked that the celebration is an occasion to honor the courageous individuals whose vision and dedication transformed Algeria’s history. He noted that Algeria’s revolution has inspired other African nations to combat colonialism and embrace Pan-Africanism.
The minister also highlighted the significance of both countries’ representation on the United Nations Security Council and their active roles in the African Union Peace and Security Council. “These achievements are not mere coincidences; they reflect the confidence that the international community and fellow African nations place in Algeria and Sierra Leone,” he concluded.
