Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Guinea, Alimamy Hassan Bangura, is en route to Freetown, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Timothy Kabba, following his release from nearly three weeks of house arrest in Conakry.
Ambassador Bangura’s confinement was part of an ongoing investigation into a cocaine trafficking case linked to the Sierra Leonean diplomatic mission. During the Ministry of Information and Communications’ weekly press briefing, Minister Kabba revealed that Sierra Leone and Guinea have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to conduct a joint judicial investigation into the cocaine case.
The Minister also noted that he was in Guinea earlier today to negotiate with Guinean authorities for the ambassador’s recall, as requested by the Sierra Leonean government. Authorities had intercepted a vehicle belonging to the Sierra Leonean Embassy carrying a significant quantity of cocaine, and they reportedly discovered $100,000 in cash allegedly connected to Ambassador Bangura, exacerbating the scandal.
This incident has strained diplomatic relations between Sierra Leone and Guinea, leading to calls for transparency regarding the involvement of Sierra Leonean officials. As Ambassador Bangura returns to Freetown, the government’s subsequent actions in addressing this unfolding situation are being closely monitored.
