The All Peoples Congress (APC) Party has issued a strong condemnation of the recent announcement by the Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon. Tamba Lamin, regarding the creation of two new districts, Bandajuma and Kpangoma, as well as new cities including the Lungi Township. This declaration was made during the ongoing Civic Day Series in Moyamba.
The APC describes the announcement as reckless and politically motivated, asserting that it was made without proper national consultation, statutory basis, or reliable census data. The party views this move as a dangerous provocation aimed at manipulating the governance structure for partisan gain.
In a statement, the APC emphasized that the establishment of new districts or cities must be grounded in credible and inclusive census data. They pointed out that the current census process has not commenced in earnest, lacking a final project document, preliminary results, and validated data. The party also criticized the exclusion of the APC from the Census Technical Committee, raising concerns about the integrity of the process.
“This clearly exposes the government’s plans to rig the census and manipulate outcomes to suit its political interests,” the APC stated, warning that any attempts to implement such administrative reforms before a credible census will be met with fierce resistance. They characterized the announcement as an attempt to subvert the constitutional order and distort future parliamentary seat allocations.
The APC urges the citizens of Sierra Leone to remain vigilant, highlighting that today’s districts could lead to the erosion of voting rights tomorrow. The party is prepared to challenge the government’s actions both domestically and internationally.
The APC is calling on all Sierra Leoneans to unite and peacefully demonstrate against this perceived manipulation of national governance. They also urge development partners and international organizations to take notice of this interference in the census process.
“We demand an immediate retraction of the minister’s statement and a full clarification from the Cabinet,” the APC concluded. “This country belongs to all of us, and we will defend its integrity with every ounce of our strength.”
