Members of Parliament from Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC), threatened a parliamentary boycott earlier today in response to the detention of their Secretary General, Lansana Dumbuya. However, Dumbuya was released from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) shortly after, following a period of questioning regarding his remarks on the controversial 2023 general elections.

Dumbuya was taken into custody on February 4 after expressing political views at an APC gathering, prompting concerns over public order and legal compliance. During a visit to the CID, APC officials, including sitting MPs and party executives, described the arrest as politically motivated and an attempt to weaken their party during a time of increasing pressure.

“This arrest is part of a broader assault on our party,” said one APC official, asserting the need for Dumbuya’s immediate release to avoid a suspension of parliamentary activities.

The peaceful yet resolute stance of the APC highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding political expression in Sierra Leone. After hours of questioning, Dumbuya was released, bringing significant attention to issues of freedom of speech and political tolerance in the country.

While police have yet to announce formal charges, they defended the necessity of the investigation in ensuring legal adherence. The APC maintains that political discourse is a fundamental right that should not be stifled.
