APC Seeks Answers from Statistics Sierra Leone Over Mapping Exercise Transparency

The All Peoples Congress (APC) has written to Statistics Sierra Leone requesting urgent clarification about alleged partiality and restricted access during the ongoing national cartographic mapping exercise.

In a letter dated March 16, 2026, addressed to the Statistician General, the opposition party cited comments made on AYV Media Empire on March 15 by Mr. Mambu, identified as Public Relations Officer for the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). According to the APC, Mambu said the SLPP had formed a coordinating committee that is actively working with Statistics Sierra Leone to monitor census mappers and collect real-time data from the mapping exercise.

The APC says those remarks suggest unequal treatment, asserting that its own Census Technical Committee has been denied similar monitoring privileges and access to live mapping data. The party warned that such disparity would raise serious concerns about fairness, transparency and the independence of preparations for the national census.

The opposition also asked Statistics Sierra Leone to confirm reports aired during the broadcast that the mapping exercise’s second phase has been completed and that the third phase is under way. The APC said it wants an official account of the exercise’s current status and governance arrangements.

Cartographic mapping establishes enumeration areas that underpin the national census; any perception of bias or restricted oversight, the APC argued, could erode public confidence in the census process.

Statistics Sierra Leone has not yet issued a public response to the APC’s letter.
