Musayeroh Barrie, Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), represented Sierra Leone at the 2025 Africa-Indian Ocean (AFI) Aviation Week, highlighting significant progress and outlining ambitious future plans for the nation’s aviation sector.
A key highlight of the event was the signing of the Civil Aviation Master Plan in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This agreement symbolizes a strengthening partnership aimed at enhancing safety, systems, and overall air travel development in Sierra Leone.
During the conference, Barrie engaged in discussions with representatives from the Ministry of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, exploring the potential for direct flights between Sierra Leone and Malaysia. This initiative seeks to broaden travel and business opportunities between the two nations.
Barrie also participated in a panel discussion focused on the role of women in aviation, emphasizing Sierra Leone’s commitment to increasing female representation in leadership positions. She referenced the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act, which mandates that women occupy at least 30% of leadership roles. She expressed gratitude to President Julius Maada Bio for his support of the law and for fostering an environment where women can thrive in leadership.
Her remarks on women in aviation resonated with attendees from various countries, illustrating Sierra Leone’s proactive steps toward creating a more inclusive and safer aviation industry.
